The bike network

Bike Streets supplies the community-selected low-stress network and construction disruptions. The OSM-marked bikeways in “More traffic” are retrieved from the designated layer of Bike Streets’ public tiles. This bounded snapshot covers the urban area through New Orleans East; it is not a complete parish inventory.

City bikeways

The City of New Orleans public bikeway layer includes only facilities marked as existing. Proposed-only facilities are excluded. Its reported last data edit is February 18, 2025. The download is stored locally and uses the same canopy calculation. It appears together with OSM-marked bikeways under “More traffic,” using the same dotted canopy colors. This display grouping does not assign a traffic-stress rating to city facilities; their facility types remain in the popups. Each display layer has separate mileage and length-weighted canopy statistics, following its visibility and canopy filter. More traffic combines OSM and city source totals; overlapping linework may be counted twice. Unknown canopy is excluded from the average. These are mapped source lengths, not deduplicated street miles.

Best-covered stretches

These 1 km connected candidates from each enabled network are ranked by length-weighted nearby canopy. A bounded graph search finds strong candidates rather than an exhaustive mathematical optimum. Construction-marked segments are excluded, and picks sharing more than 25% of their source length are removed. The source does not supply the turn restrictions needed for turn-by-turn directions.

What the canopy percentage means

The analysis counts tree-canopy pixels within 10 meters of each route segment (up to 100 meters long), using NOAA’s 1-meter land-cover classification. At least 90% of a buffer must have valid data to receive a score. Unknown coverage is never shown as zero.

NOAA C-CAP imagery is from 2017, before Hurricane Ida and later tree loss or planting. Canopy near a street does not measure shade at a particular time of day. Ground-check routes and conditions.

A new analysis, with the same inspiration

Bike Easy’s original map included Laura Harris’s hand-selected shaded corridors and pink connectors. Those choices have not been recovered or recreated here. Colors on this map represent calculated canopy coverage when available.
